Poverty And Lack Of Poverty - 1493 Words
ââ¬ËPovertyââ¬â¢ could be considered a difficult concept to define due to its subjective and personal nature; what poverty means to one person doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily mean the same to another. Different aspects of life including: income, living conditions, access to education, access to nutritional food and clean water are all factors that contribute towards an understanding of what ââ¬Ëpovertyââ¬â¢ actually is. Additionally it also doesnââ¬â¢t consider the idea of inflation whereby, the same amount of income may not cover a personââ¬â¢s needs anymore due to the prices of certain resources are costing more. This version of poverty is often used to make the statistics appear lower and to suggest that there isnââ¬â¢t as much poverty as there is when considering other ideas such as relative poverty. Relative poverty, suggests that ââ¬Ëas overall living standards rise so does the notion of what it means to be poor, so that any definition of poverty will be relative to the average standard of living of all within societyââ¬â¢ (Alcock et all, 2012, p.181182). This is reflected in the criteria used to measure relative poverty being people who earn less than 60% of the median income of that year rather than the specific year of 2010/11 that is used to measure absolute poverty. When considering the relative poverty levels in the UK the results are even higher with 22% of the whole population living in relative poverty; including 30% of all children (McGuiness, 2016, p.3).
